Who We Are
We are all woven into this great country and it is each and every single one of us that makes Australia.
Equally, it is each and every single one of us in this community that makes Camberwell Girls.
For over 60 years we have delighted in welcoming families from all over the world to form the highly inclusive and multicultural school that you see today.
Diverse communities are vibrant communities. Being in a diverse community in which many races, cultures, religions, ideas and socioeconomic backgrounds are represented, exposes students to others who are not like them and therefore enriches their experiences. Diversity also does something else – it helps students to learn.
In 1962, our student body included girls from Australia, England, Thailand, China, Hungary, Malaysia, South Africa, Switzerland, Japan and Papua New Guinea.
Headmistress at the time, Dorothy Hall reported, “It is wonderful to see these children absorbed into our group and to know that friendship and understanding between individuals, representing the various peoples of the world, can be achieved very easily.”
Fast forward 64 years to 2016. Today, the population of our School covers every continent except Antarctica! This is not just Camberwell Girls. This is not just multiculturalism. This is contemporary Australia.
It is truly great that we are all different. This is what enriches our community immensely. Woven through our fine School, woven through each and every Camberwell girl is a world of different perspectives, cultures and people. While 70% of our current students were born in Australia and 30% in other countries, one thing is for certain, 100% of them are Camberwell girls.
